Haven on the Highway
For many African Americans, finding a safe place to stop for gasoline or food during the segregated era of Jim Crow could be difficult and even perilous. The Oscar-winning film "Green Book" chronicles these challenges and the real-life directory of roadside businesses that welcomed African Americans. Built in 1915 and the first black-owned business along Route 66, Threatt Filling Station in Luther was one such establishment, offering a safe place for all travelers regardless of race to get fuel, food, and rest along the Mother Road.
